Special needs children may need special considerations when trying to make friends. As a parent, you may want to contact parents and invite one child at a time for a get together. The other parents may want to be present also during the visit.

Encourage your child to talk to you. You will gain trust and improve attachments. Show them you care and are interested in their concerns.

Chances are, the arrival of your child will hold mixed feelings for them. They have left a foster family and a life they have become accustomed to, as well as a school and friends, and are grieving these losses. They may be excited about their new life, but unsure as to what it will bring. Maintain patience and understanding.

Give your child assignments or responsibilities that you know they can accomplish. With every success comes more confidence and an increased ability to cope with new situations.
